TUBA4A is one of the major components of tubulin, which forms microtubules—cylindrical structures composed of laterally associated linear protofilaments made of α- and β-tubulin heterodimers. Microtubule growth occurs through the addition of GTP-tubulin dimers to the microtubule end, forming a stabilizing cap. Below this cap, tubulin dimers exist in a GDP-bound state due to the GTPase activity of α-tubulin.
