FOXD3 is a transcription factor that binds to the consensus sequence 5'-A[AT]T[AG]TTTGTTT-3', functioning both as a transcriptional repressor (by similar: PubMed:11891324) and activator (by similar: PubMed:11891324). It negatively regulates the expression of transcriptional repressor RHIT/ZNF205 (by similar: PubMed:22306510) and promotes neural crest cell development from neural tube progenitors (by similar: PubMed:11891324). Additionally, FOXD3 restricts neural progenitor cells to the neural crest lineage by suppressing interneuron differentiation (by similar: PubMed:11891324) and is essential for maintaining pluripotent cells during pre-implantation and peri-implantation stages of embryogenesis (by similar: PubMed:11891324).
