Background

SEC24A is a component of the coat protein complex II (COPII), which promotes the formation of transport vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The COPII coat has two main functions: physically deforming the ER membrane into vesicles and selecting cargo molecules for transport to the Golgi complex. SEC24A plays a central role in cargo selection within the COPII complex and, together with SEC24B, may exhibit different specificity compared to SEC24C and SEC24D. It preferentially packages cargos containing cytoplasmic DxE or LxxLE motifs and may also recognize conformational epitopes. by similar: SEC24B may share similar cargo specificity with SEC24A.
