Background

KCNJ2 encodes inward rectifier potassium channels that preferentially allow potassium influx into the cell. Their voltage dependence is regulated by extracellular potassium concentration, with higher concentrations shifting the activation range toward more positive potentials. The inward rectification primarily results from blockage of outward current by intracellular magnesium.
