PRKAB2 is a non-catalytic subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an energy-sensing protein kinase crucial for regulating cellular energy metabolism. Under low intracellular ATP levels, AMPK activates energy-producing pathways while inhibiting energy-consuming processes, including protein, carbohydrate, and lipid biosynthesis, as well as cell growth and proliferation. AMPK functions through direct phosphorylation of metabolic enzymes and long-term effects via phosphorylation of transcriptional regulators. Additionally, PRKAB2 regulates cellular polarity by remodeling the actin cytoskeleton, likely through indirect myosin activation. As a scaffold protein, its C-terminus bridges alpha (PRKAA1 or PRKAA2) and gamma subunits (PRKAG1, PRKAG2, or PRKAG3) to facilitate AMPK complex assembly.
