MFN1 is a mitochondrial outer membrane GTPase that mediates mitochondrial clustering and fusion. Its membrane clustering function requires GTPase activity and may involve a major rearrangement of the coiled-coil domains. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles, and their morphology is determined by the balance between fusion and fission events. In vitro studies show that MFN1 overexpression induces the formation of mitochondrial networks. This protein exhibits low GTPase activity.
