Cytokeratins (CK) are keratin proteins exclusively found in epithelial tissues, classified as type I (acidic) and type II (basic). As the largest subgroup of intermediate filaments, they form the eukaryotic cytoskeleton alongside other filaments, functioning in epithelial integrity maintenance, injury protection, and cellular communication. Expressed in pairs and numbered 1–20 by molecular weight/isoelectric point, they include simple epithelial types (e.g., CK7, CK8, CK18–20) and complex types (e.g., cutaneous CK5/6, CK10, CK14–15). An alternative system categorizes acidic type I (low MW, CK9–20) and basic type II (high MW, CK1–8). Monoclonal antibodies with varying specificity target these proteins.
