AMBP is a multifunctional protein with antioxidant, tissue repair, protease inhibitory, and extracellular matrix remodeling activities (by similar). As an antioxidant, it protects cells from oxidative damage through reductase activity and radical scavenging, including degrading free heme, reducing methemoglobin and cytochrome c, and maintaining redox homeostasis in intravascular, extravascular, and intracellular (e.g., mitochondrial) compartments (by similar). As a Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor, it suppresses proteases such as kallikrein, GZMK/granzyme, and PLG/plasmin, regulating inflammation and cytotoxic responses (by similar). In the extracellular matrix, as part of the I-alpha-I complex, it binds hyaluronan to facilitate matrix remodeling and surrounds oocytes during cumulus expansion (by similar). Additionally, it acts as a chaperone to promote proper folding of bikunin in the endoplasmic reticulum (by similar).
