Background

ABI2 is a key regulator of actin cytoskeleton dynamics underlying cell motility and adhesion. As a component of the WAVE complex, it activates the actin nucleating machinery Arp2/3 to drive lamellipodia formation. ABI2 also functions as both a regulator and substrate of nonreceptor tyrosine kinases ABL1 and ABL2 in processes related to cell growth and differentiation (by similar). In neurons, it controls dendritic spine morphogenesis and may promote the formation of memory-associated mushroom-type spines (by similar). Additionally, ABI2 participates in nascent adherens junction assembly in epithelial cells and likely regulates lamellipodia-driven adherens junction formation during ocular lens morphogenesis (by similar).
