  2. Antibiotic
  3. Ristocetin

Ristocetin is a glycopeptide antibiotic. Ristocetin exerts bactericidal effect against a range of Gram-positive cocci, Gram-negative diplococcic, and Myco. Tuberculosis. Ristocetin can be used in enterococcal, staphylococcal, and alphahaemolytic streptococcal infection. Ristocetin induces platelet aggregation in the presence of von Willebrand factor (VWF). Ristocetin causes precipitation of fibrinogen from platelet poor plasma. Ristocetin initiates ADP release. Ristocetin can be studied in research for von Willebrand disease.

In Vitro

Ristocetin (0.5-5 mg/mL) produces small but statistically significant decreases in the electrophoretic mobility of formalin-treated platelets in H-S buffer at pH 7, and also leads to platelet clumping at concentration >3 mM[1].
Ristocetin (0.5-5 mg/mL) results in a decrease in fresh washed platelets[1].
Ristocetin (5 mg/mL) produces no effect on electrophoretic mobility at pH9, suggesting the activity is pH-dependent[1].
Ristocetin (0.5-1 mg/mL) results in marked difference when added to platelets in the presence of normal and von Willebrand plasma, where a dramatic enhancement of reduction in mobility is seen with normal plasma[1].
Ristocetin (1.8 mg/mL) results in 12.2% reduction in mobility of normal platelet rich plasma[1].
Ristocetin (0.6 mg/mL) fails to induce agglutination of washed platelets in normal plasma after 30-35 min of trypsinization[1].

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
