Wilms' Tumor 1 (WT1) is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in cellular development and survival, recognizing and binding to the DNA sequence 5'-GCG(T/G)GGGCG-3'. It regulates the expression of numerous target genes, including EPO, and is essential for the development of the urogenital system. WT1 has both tumor suppressor and oncogenic roles in tumor formation. Its function may be isoform-specific: isoforms lacking the KTS motif may act as transcription factors, while those containing the KTS motif may bind mRNA and play a role in mRNA metabolism or splicing. Isoform 1 has lower DNA affinity but can bind RNA.
