UCP3 is a putative transmembrane transporter involved in mitochondrial metabolism, though its precise mechanism remains unclear. Initially, this mitochondrial protein was proposed to function as a proton transmembrane transporter, shuttling protons from the mitochondrial intermembrane space to the matrix, inducing proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane and uncoupling membrane potential generation from ATP synthesis. However, this role is debated, and uncoupling may not be its primary function but rather a byproduct of conventional metabolite transporter activity. by similar studies suggest UCP3 may primarily act as a metabolite transporter rather than a direct proton uncoupler.
