SLBP is an RNA-binding protein involved in histone pre-mRNA processing. It binds the stem-loop structure of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNAs and enhances efficient 3'-end processing by stabilizing the complex between histone pre-mRNA and U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) via the histone downstream element (HDE). Additionally, SLBP plays a key role in transporting mature histone mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and delivering it to the translation machinery, while also stabilizing mature histone mRNA and potentially regulating histone gene expression during the cell cycle. By similarity, it is involved in the mechanism by which growing oocytes accumulate histones to support early embryogenesis and binds to the 5' side of the histone pre-mRNA stem-loop structure.
