IP10 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in diverse processes including chemotaxis, differentiation, and activation of peripheral immune cells, regulation of cell growth, apoptosis, and modulation of angiostatic effects. It plays a significant role during viral infections by stimulating immune cell activation and migration to infected sites (by similar). Mechanistically, CXCL10 binding to the CXCR3 receptor triggers G protein-mediated signaling, leading to phospholipase C-dependent pathway activation, increased intracellular calcium, and actin reorganization, thereby recruiting activated Th1 lymphocytes to inflammatory sites. The CXCL10/CXCR3 axis also critically responds to brain injury by activating microglia (the resident CNS macrophages) and directing them to lesion sites, which is essential for neuronal reorganization (by similar).
