HPS-1 is a component of the BLOC-3 complex, which functions as a guanine exchange factor (GEF) for RAB32 and RAB38, facilitating the exchange of GDP to GTP and converting them from an inactive GDP-bound state to an active GTP-bound state. The BLOC-3 complex plays a key role in regulating melanin production and melanosome biogenesis, and it promotes the membrane localization of RAB32 and RAB38.
