Background

Glucagon is a key hormone in glucose metabolism and homeostasis, regulating blood glucose by increasing gluconeogenesis and decreasing glycolysis. As a counterregulatory hormone to insulin, it raises plasma glucose levels during insulin-induced hypoglycemia and plays a role in initiating/maintaining hyperglycemia in diabetes. It potently stimulates glucose-dependent insulin release and IL6-mediated insulin secretion. Glucagon influences gastric motility, suppresses plasma glucagon levels, and may independently regulate satiety and peripheral glucose disposal. It exhibits growth-promoting effects on intestinal epithelium and potentially modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) via LH, TSH, CRH, oxytocin, and vasopressin.
