Ferritin Heavy Chain stores iron in a soluble, non-toxic, and readily available form, playing a crucial role in iron homeostasis. It exhibits ferroxidase activity, oxidizing ferrous iron to ferric hydroxides for storage. Additionally, it facilitates iron delivery to cells (by similar) and mediates iron uptake in capsule cells of the developing kidney (by similar). The cargo receptor NCOA4 mediates its delivery to lysosomes for autophagic degradation and subsequent iron release.
