Background

DNAJA1 is a co-chaperone for HSPA8/Hsc70, stimulating ATP hydrolysis but not the folding of unfolded proteins mediated by HSPA1A (in vitro). It plays a role in protein transport into mitochondria via its co-chaperone function. DNAJA1 also acts as a co-chaperone for HSPA1B, negatively regulating the translocation of BAX from the cytosol to mitochondria in response to cellular stress, thereby protecting cells against apoptosis. However, under cellular stress mediated by anisomycin or UV exposure, DNAJA1 promotes apoptosis.
