CYCS is an electron carrier protein. The oxidized form of the cytochrome c heme group accepts an electron from the cytochrome c1 subunit of cytochrome reductase and transfers it to the cytochrome oxidase complex, the final protein carrier in the mitochondrial electron-transport chain. Additionally, CYCS plays a role in apoptosis. Inhibition of anti-apoptotic members or activation of pro-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family alters mitochondrial membrane permeability, leading to the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol.
