Glycophorin A is the major intrinsic membrane protein of the erythrocyte and a component of the ankyrin-1 complex, which is involved in maintaining the stability and shape of the erythrocyte membrane. Its N-terminal glycosylated segment, located outside the erythrocyte membrane, carries MN blood group receptors. Glycophorin A is critical for the function of SLC4A1, required for its high activity, and may facilitate SLC4A1 translocation to the plasma membrane. Additionally, it serves as a receptor for microbial infections: (Microbial infection) Acts as a receptor for Hepatitis A virus (HAV); (Microbial infection) Functions as a receptor for Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte-binding antigen 175 (EBA-175), with binding dependent on sialic acid residues of O-linked glycans.
