CD13 is a broad specificity aminopeptidase involved in the final digestion of peptides generated from hydrolysis of proteins by gastric and pancreatic proteases. It also processes various peptides including peptide hormones (e.g., angiotensin III and IV), neuropeptides, and chemokines. It may cleave peptides bound to major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC class II) molecules of antigen-presenting cells and play roles in angiogenesis and cholesterol crystallization. It may function in amino acid transport by binding and regulating the amino acid transporter SLC6A19 (By similarity). (Microbial infection) Acts as a receptor for human coronavirus 229E/HCoV-229E, binding its spike glycoprotein. (Microbial infection) Also mediates Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection.
