Background

ATF1 is a protein that binds to the cAMP response element (CRE, consensus sequence: 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3'), which is present in many viral and cellular promoters. It also binds to the Tax-responsive element (TRE) of HTLV-I and mediates PKA-induced stimulation of CRE-reporter genes. ATF1 represses the expression of FTH1 and other antioxidant detoxification genes while triggering cell proliferation and transformation.
