Background

ASGPR mediates the endocytosis of plasma glycoproteins that have had their terminal sialic acid residues removed from their complex carbohydrate moieties. The receptor recognizes terminal galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine units. Following ligand binding, the resulting complex is internalized and transported to a sorting organelle, where the receptor and ligand dissociate. The receptor then recycles back to the cell membrane surface.
