AMPKβ1 is a non-catalytic regulatory subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), serving as a scaffold that facilitates the assembly of the AMPK complex by bridging the catalytic α subunits (PRKAA1 or PRKAA2) and regulatory γ subunits (PRKAG1, PRKAG2, or PRKAG3). While lacking kinase activity, it plays a critical structural role in maintaining the integrity of the AMPK heterotrimer, which functions as an energy sensor to activate catabolic pathways and inhibit anabolic processes during low ATP conditions. Additionally, AMPKβ1 may indirectly contribute to cellular polarity regulation through actin cytoskeleton remodeling (By similarity).
