Background

Alpha-ENaC is one of the three pore-forming subunits of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) heterotrimer, playing a critical role in sodium balance and fluid homeostasis regulation (by similar). Functioning in epithelial tissues, it mediates the electrodiffusion of sodium ions from extracellular fluid across the apical membrane (with osmotic water flow following) (by similar). In the kidneys, Alpha-ENaC is essential for maintaining sodium homeostasis through electrogenic sodium reabsorption, while also being crucial for airway surface liquid homeostasis, which is vital for proper mucus clearance (by similar).
