SERPINA1 is an inhibitor of serine proteases, primarily targeting elastase with moderate affinity for plasmin and thrombin. It irreversibly inhibits trypsin, chymotrypsin, and plasminogen activator. The aberrant form inhibits insulin-induced NO synthesis in platelets, reduces coagulation time, and exhibits proteolytic activity against insulin and plasmin. by similar: SERPINA1 also acts as a reversible chymotrypsin inhibitor, inhibiting elastase but not trypsin, with its major physiological role being the protection of the lower respiratory tract from proteolytic damage by human leukocyte elastase (HLE).
